A Prayer for a Friend

Sitting in the hall on a folding chair was a lady with her head hung low, sullen eyes and a look of despair. I sat down beside her and asked if she wanted to visit while she waited to see a doctor. She immediately started to cry. I told her if she needed someone to just listen, I would sit and wait as long as she needed, but if not, I would understand. After she regained her composure, she smiled and started to tell me her story. Her daughter's boyfriend had beaten her after a confrontation. Her daughter was a teenage mother and had a drug/alcohol problem. This patient was doing what she felt was right and had called some agencies for help. She now had health issues herself that made it difficult for her to help care for her young grandson. What touched my heart was the change in her eyes when I simply asked if I could pray for her. The tears were now tears of joy, feeling like she found a place full of people who care about her. She was so thankful for Clinic with a Heart and with a little encouragement and a listening ear, she left in much better spirits and a will to carry on.
